We all love traveling – regardless if it’s for business or a holiday. When we travel, we take a break from our routine, see new things – and overall have a good time.
The hardest truth about traveling, however, is that it’s very difficult to stay fit during that time. Whether we like it or not, we end up coming home with a few extra kilos that will be a pain to burn off.
Still, what can we do when we don’t have time to cook a proper meal? We usually go for fast food, since it’s easily available. And it’s not like we can carry our gym around with us. That one stays home.
Staying Fit While You Travel
What gym enthusiasts understand, however, is that you need to learn how to adapt. Here are some foolproof ways to ensure that you stay fit while you are traveling:
#1 – Eat Breakfast
We know that you may not have a lot of time on your hands – but you should at least make time for breakfast. If you are traveling, the chances are that you will be on the road a lot – so by the time lunch comes, you’ll be so hungry that you’ll dive into the first fast food you see.
If you eat a healthy breakfast, not only will you give your body time to break it down throughout the day, but you will also prevent overeating. The good news is that most hotels have breakfast included – so, you’ll be saving from your budget as well.
#2 – Drink Water
If you do not drink enough water, you have the tendency to do one of two things: eat a lot of snacks or drink a lot of soda – none of which is good for your weight. By drinking water, you will give your body the false sensation that it’s full – and it will also be hydrated.
Plus, it is good for your skin. Many dieters make the mistake of not drinking enough water, which in turn causes their skin to lose flexibility. A person may be slim and relatively fat-free, but if their skin is sagging, it’s probably because they did not drink enough water.
#3 – Take the Stairs
You’re traveling! Why bother with stairs when you have elevators and escalators? Well, if you want to stay fit, you might want to ditch those two and go for the stairs. This way, you will work your glutes, your hamstring – and basically, all your muscles in your butt and legs. The more stairs you can get your feet on, the better.
#4 – Exercise
“But I don’t have my gym near me!” These are just excuses. You don’t need gym equipment near you to work out, nor do you need a full two-hour workout session to sweat it out. In times like these, five to ten minutes is all that you need. You can do it in the morning or in the evening, whenever you have some time.
Choose exercises that allow you to work with your body weight. A combo of squats, abs, and pushups is generally enough to provide you with a quick body workout.
#5 – Take a Walk
No, that was not made out to be an insult. We know how tempting it can be to take the bus or a taxi just to “see more attractions in a shorter time.” However, you’ve got to admit, that’s the lazy bum in you speaking – because you don’t want to walk such a long distance.
Touristically speaking, it’s more fruitful to walk while you are traveling. Who knows, maybe between that museum that you wanted to see and the aquarium, there is a beautiful park that you wouldn’t have otherwise seen if you took the bus. Plus, you’ll get a workout out of it. It may not look like much, but walking can not only give you a proper cardio workout but some good leg and butt work.
#6 – Cut Down on the Calories
We know, “you’re on a vacation.” Sadly for you, your body does not care that you want to taste every special delicacy from your destination. Calories are calories, so if you decide to pig out just to “have more energy for the rest of the day,” you might want to rethink that idea.
If you feel that continuously walking has put you through a deep state of hunger, try to avoid going for a full meal. Instead, just opt for a protein bar. It has fewer calories than your regular snack, and it will keep you satiated until your next meal. It’s definitely a healthier and a better option than your regular hot dog sold down the corner of the street.
#7 – Cook Your Own Food
If it’s possible and you have your own kitchen, you might want to buy your groceries and cook your food instead of eating out. And no, by this, we don’t mean French fries and other quickly prepared fried meals. We mean the healthy ones that preferably have some greenery in them as well. This way, you will know precisely what you are putting in your mouth – and will, therefore, be able to control your weight.
#8 – Enjoy Your Time
Do you know how many calories you burn just by walking around your favorite touristic spots? Let’s say that you are planning a visit to the amusement park and you see a very funny play going on. Said play will cause you to laugh non-stop for a good half an hour. And laughing burns calories.
Similarly, let’s say that you want to go on a roller coaster. When you do that, you will involuntarily scream most of the ride. Do you know how many muscles you will have to use in order to pull out such a scream? Many of them, that’s to be sure. Therefore, you will burn fat and have a good workout just by enjoying yourself.
It’s not that difficult to stay in shape while you are traveling. All you have to do is to keep yourself moving and be careful what you eat. And most importantly, make sure that you have fun – laughing burns calories, remember?!
